1. Replace plumbing fixtures:
When replacing plumbing fixtures, consider the long-term savings by purchasing a high efficiency water heater or a low water consumption fixture.
2. Dishwasher:
Load your dishwasher completely before running (they use the same amount of water for small loads as full loads).
3. Outside hose:
Check outside hose spigots for leaks. Also, check hoses for damage and leaky washers.
4. No leaks:
Turn off all water in the house and then check your water meter before and after a two-hour period. If the meter has changed then your house is leaking water and should be checked by a professional
5. Insulate pipes:
Insulate hot water pipes in attics or crawl spaces. You will get hot water faster – reducing water consumption.
6. Old showerhead:
If your showerhead is old, consider replacing it with an ultra low-flow version. This can save up to 2.5 gallons of water per minute.
7. Faucet running:
Do not keep the faucet running while you are brushing your teeth or shaving.
8. Lawn Sprinkler Systems:
Check the programming on your timer to make sure you are not over-watering. Also, run the system thru a complete cycle to ensure all zones are turning on and off as required.
